For the second year in a row, none of India's four biggest metro cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Chennai - appear on LinkedIn's ranking of the country's fastest-growing job markets. Instead, the top of the 2026 Cities on the Rise list is led by Visakhapatnam, a coastal city in Andhra Pradesh.

Visakhapatnam's rise is being driven by major investment: a large artificial intelligence hub from Google, a significant data centre project from Reliance, and expansion plans from IT giants like Infosys, Cognizant, and Accenture. Behind it, cities like Ludhiana (driven by manufacturing, aviation, and hospitality growth), Surat (exports and startup activity), and Vadodara (long-term business investment) are also climbing fast.

This matters for students planning their careers, because it challenges a long-held assumption: that the best jobs are only found in India's traditional big-city job markets. Tier-2 cities are increasingly where hiring is accelerating fastest, often because companies are actively choosing to expand there rather than compete for talent in saturated metro markets.

The takeaway isn't that students should abandon plans to work in big cities - it's that limiting your job search only to metros may mean missing some of the fastest-growing opportunities in the country.
