Sridhar Vembu Built a $1.3 Billion Company Without Taking a Single Rupee From Investors
While most headline-grabbing Indian startups raise large rounds of venture capital, Sridhar Vembu took a completely different path with Zoho, the company he founded in 1996. Nearly three decades later, Zoho has grown into a business with reported 2025 revenue above $1.3 billion, more than 15,000 employees, and over 90 million users across 150+ countries - built without ever taking outside VC funding.
Zoho now offers more than 50 business applications spanning CRM, HR, finance, and analytics, competing directly with much larger, heavily funded global players.
What makes Vembu's story especially relevant for students interested in business is the discipline behind it. Bootstrapped companies, by necessity, have to find paying customers early and build products people are willing to pay for - rather than relying on investor money to grow first and figure out revenue later.
His journey is a useful counterpoint to the common assumption that a "real" startup needs to raise huge funding rounds to be considered successful. Sometimes, the slower, self-funded path builds something more durable.
